Iron Range Committee on Equal Justice to hold two open courthouse events

The recently formed Iron Range Committee on Equal Justice is hosting two open courthouse events for the public to see the work of those who play a role in our local justice system, meet the people who keep our justice system running, and get access to legal resources and information. The first event will take place at the Virginia Courthouse from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday April 5, 2019. The second open courthouse event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday May 3, 2019.
 
All St. Louis County residents are encouraged to attend the events which will feature a meet-and-greet with local district judges, a FAQ session with judges and other court personnel, courthouse tours, an information fair, a keynote speech from Court of Appeals Judge James B Florey, and a presentation of “In Her Shoes” from Advocates for Family Peace. A full schedule of events is below. Interested residents are welcome to come and go from these free events, no RSVP is required.

1:00 - 1:45 p.m.    

Courtroom FAQ event lead by judicial officers, courthouse administrative staff, and law enforcement
 

2:00 - 2:30 p.m.    

Courtroom panel about issues facing juveniles in the court system
 

2:45 - 3:15 p.m.  

“In Her Shoes” presentation lead by Advocates for Peace
 

3:30 - 4:00 p.m.    

Law enforcement K-9 unit presentation
 

4:15 - 5:00 p.m.    

Courtroom FAQ event lead by judicial officers, courthouse administrative staff, and law enforcement
 

Throughout:    

  • Courthouse tours including visits to the County Attorney’s office, court administration, law library, and other notable locations in the courthouse
  • Light refreshments
  • Information booths will be set up and staffed in Courtroom #4 in Virginia and Break Room in Hibbing
 
The Iron Range Committee on Equal Justice was formed in 2018 to advance equality and promote multicultural understanding and competency among judicial officers, court employees, and justice system partners who live and work in Iron Range communities. The committee meets regularly and is made up of judicial officers, court employees, law enforcement, attorneys, community members, and community organizations.
 
The Virginia Courthouse is located at 300 5th Ave. South Virginia, MN 55792. The Hibbing Courthouse is located at 1810 E. 12th Ave. Hibbing, MN 55746. These events are open to the public and press.
