Mitchell Hamline School of Law will honor Minnesota Supreme Court Associate Justice Anne K. McKeig and two other alumnae during the All School Reunion Alumni Reception from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. The School will award the Distinguished Alumni Award to Justice McKeig for her professional accomplishments, high ethical standards, and lasting contributions to the legal field. McKeig will attend the event and provide brief remarks.

“I am touched to receive this Award from my fellow alumni. I came to Mitchell Hamline unsure of what my path would be after law school, but found a home here; one I could return to and draw strength from,” said Justice McKeig. “I thank my fellow graduates for this Award. It is a distinct honor to be recognized by the Mitchell Hamline community.”

According to Mitchell Hamline School of Law, the Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes graduates who demonstrate the highest values and ethical standards in achieving professional distinction or lasting contributions to their fields of endeavor, including professional accomplishments of a distinctly creative or challenging nature, or outstanding leadership within the profession.

A person who nominated Justice McKeig for the award noted that her work on behalf of children extends to Mitchell Hamline. Justice McKeig has taught a course in child abuse and the law as an adjunct professor at the School. She has also made many visits to the School to speak to students and other groups. The nominator summarized by saying, “These are just some of the ways that Justice McKeig has served the constituency of our School, in addition to her work for Minnesota, and particularly for vulnerable kids.”

Justice McKeig is the first Native American woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court. She grew up on the Leech Lake Reservation and is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. She joined the bench in September 2016. Her appointment to the Minnesota Supreme Court marked the second time in the state’s history that the Court had a female-majority, which it maintains today. Prior to her appointment, she served as a Hennepin County District Court judge on criminal and family court assignments, and later as the Family Court presiding judge. She also worked in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in the Child Protection Division, as an Indian Child Welfare Act Specialist, and for the American Prosecutors Research Institute. Justice McKeig currently serves as an adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
