The Minnesota Supreme Court Seeks Applicants for the Minnesota Competency Attainment Board

The Supreme Court is seeking to fill one vacancy for a defense attorney position, on the Minnesota Competency Restoration Board.

The board consists of seven members including three members appointed by the Supreme Court and four members appointed by the Governor. At least three members of the board shall live outside the First, Second, Fourth, and Tenth Judicial Districts. The board administers a statewide, independent competency restoration system that certifies competency restoration programs and uses forensic navigators to promote prevention and diversion of people with mental illnesses and cognitive impairments from entering the legal system, support defendants with mental illness and cognitive impairments, support defendants in the competency process, and assist courts and partners in coordinating competency restoration services.

All members must demonstrate an interest in maintaining a high quality, independent forensic navigator program and a thorough process for certification of competency restoration programs. Members shall be familiar with Minn. Stat. sections 611.40 to 611.59, the Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure, particularly rule 20; and chapter 253B.

Applicants interested in appointment to this position must submit a letter detailing their background. Resumes are welcome but not required. The application deadline is Friday, October 31st, 2025 at 4:30 P.M.
