Legal Advice Clinics

Volunteer lawyers give brief, free legal advice at several locations in the Hennepin County Court, including the Self-Help Centers, Conciliation Court, Housing Court, and the Courthouse at Brookdale. Use of these advice clinics is generally limited to people who live in Hennepin County or have a court case in Hennepin County. Some clinic services are also limited to people whose income is within a certain range of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Self-Help Center (Main Location)

Located on the skyway level of the Hennepin County Government Center, this legal advice clinic offers help on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up for the advice clinic starts at 8:00 a.m.
  General public: Free legal consults are available on any legal topic.
  Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Monday - Friday
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Monday

  Low-income qualifying people: Free legal consults for low-income qualifying individuals on all legal topics except family law and criminal law.
  Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Monday - Friday

Housing Court Project (HC Govt. Ctr., Floor C-3)

Attorneys give brief legal advice to low-income tenants and low-income landlords on a first-come, first-served basis. Service is located on the 3rd Floor of the "Courts Tower" in the Hennepin County Government Center.

  Low-income qualifying people: Free legal consult are available for tenants and landlords in Hennepin County on housing issues.
  Hours: 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday
     
Conciliation Court (located in Minneapolis City Hall)

Free legal consults for low-income qualifying individuals. People are helped on a first-come, first-served basis in Room 312 of City Hall. Volunteer attorneys give free legal advice on conciliation court matters.

  Low-income qualifying people: Free legal consults are available on any legal topic (generally, for claims up to $15,000.) You must be screened for income eligibility to use the clinic.
  Hours:

9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday
1:00 p.m - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday

     
Family Court Self-Help Center

Attorneys from the Volunteer Lawyers Network answer family law questions on a first-come, first-served basis. The advice clinic is on the 1st Floor of the Family Justice Center, 110 4th St. S., in downtown Minneapolis. Volunteer attorneys sometimes cancel, so call (612)752-6677 if you want to confirm that an attorney is scheduled.

  Low-income qualifying people: Free legal consults for low-income people (up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines) on family law topics only.
  Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon Monday and Thursday
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday and Friday
    Sign-up for the advice clinic starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Family Court Self-Help Center on a first-come-first-served basis, and the number of slots is very limited.

Low-income people who live in Hennepin County can get a free 20-minute legal advice consult on family law matters from the Volunteer Lawyers Network. To schedule a consult, please call the VLN Intake Line at (612)752-6677 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Free on-site parking is available at the Brookdale Courthouse.
