Schedule the Marriage Ceremony
If you want to get married by a judge, you must schedule your marriage ceremony with a judge's clerk BEFORE your wedding date. See the List of Judges for Marriage Ceremonies for contact information. Or, call the "Marriage Line" at (612) 348-9962 to hear a recorded message with this information. If you require special accommodations, such as a ceremony performed in a language other than English, please CONTACT US with your request.
Get a Marriage License
At least five (5) days or more before your wedding date, you must get a marriage license from a Minnesota county registrar, which includes the Hennepin County Service Center. A marriage license expires after six (6) months.
NOTE: You generally cannot get married on the same day you apply for a marriage license. If there is an emergency, you can ask the Minnesota county registrar where you applied for a license about getting a waiver of the five-day wait period. You must present your request for a waiver to a judge in the county where you applied for the license. If you have NOT already scheduled a marriage date, contact Court Administration in the county where you applied for your marriage license about how you present your request for a waiver to a judge. If you have already scheduled a marriage ceremony with a Hennepin County judge and applied for the license in Hennepin County, contact the judge’s clerk about requesting the waiver.
For more detailed information about how to get a marriage license in Hennepin County, call (612)348-8240.
Day of the Marriage Ceremony
When you arrive for your marriage ceremony, you must bring your marriage license papers and two (2) adults who can witness the ceremony. If necessary, some judges may assist in providing witnesses for you. You must make that request at the time you schedule your ceremony.
