Dakota County Court Waives Fees to Increase Fine Collections

Posted: Wednesday, September 8, 2004

HASTINGS, MN (Sept. 8, 2004) – The Dakota County District Court Administrator will temporarily waive collection fees on misdemeanor, traffic and criminal fines to increase fine collections for victims, decrease debts owed to the court and enforce judges’ orders.

Effective immediately, defendants with Dakota County traffic, criminal or juvenile cases that were sentenced during or before 2002 can avoid the $40-$50 collection fee by paying their remaining fines and fees by November 1.  In some instances, the collection fee could equal as much as 90 percent of the total amount remaining due on a case.

“For many years, Dakota County District Court staff has very successfully collected fines and fees from people convicted of misdemeanors, traffic offenses and criminal violations,” said Dakota County Court Administrator Van Brostrom.  “However, we are continually searching for innovative ways to increase fine, fee and restitution collections that benefit victims, cities and other government agencies.”

Each year, Dakota County District Court collects more than $12 million in fines, fees and restitution.

To qualify for a collection fee waiver, the:

  1. Charge(s) must have originated in Dakota County.  Cities include Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Mendota, Lakeville, West St. Paul, South St. Paul, Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, Mendota, Mendota Heights and Hastings.
  2. Fines must have been due before or during 2002.
  3. Defendant must owe $55 or more on each case.
