Luis Bartolomei Appointed to Fill Fourth Judicial District Vacancy

Today, Governor Mark Dayton announced the appointment of Luis A. Bartolomei as District Court Judge in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. Mr. Bartolomei will be replacing the Honorable Charles A. Porter Jr, who retired earlier this year.

Mr. Bartolomei is currently an attorney with Student Legal Services at the University of Minnesota where he represents students in criminal and immigration/nationality law. He is also an adjunct professor at Hamline University and is a former adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law. Mr. Bartolomei previously worked as an associate attorney with James C. Selmer & Associates, P.A. He also served as an assistant public defender within Minnesota’s Third and Tenth Judicial Districts. He received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1991; and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1994.

Additionally, Mr. Bartolomei is a former member and chair of Edina’s Human Rights and Relations Commission, and was interim Executive Director of the State Council on Affairs of Chicano Latino Persons. Mr. Bartolomei is actively involved with the National Legal Aid and Defenders’ Association and has presented nationally on criminal and immigration law. He is also a catechist and member of the choir at the church of Saint Patrick in Edina.

About the appointment, Governor Dayton said, “I interviewed three outstanding candidates for this appointment which made it a very difficult decision for me to make, but Mr. Bartolomei’s connection with the community and his experience representing so many people of many different backgrounds through the Student Legal Services at the University of Minnesota makes him very well suited to be a District Court Judge in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District.”

Mr. Bartolomei resides with his family in Edina. Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District consists of Hennepin County.
