Court Interpreter Policy Updates

I hope this email finds you well. As you may already know, revisions to Rule 8 of the General Rules of Practice in District Courts were effective July 1, 2020.  This is the Court Rule that directs the operations of the court interpreter program.  As a result, changes have been made to the Interpreter Roster Qualification Policy, 513 (c) that are effective December 1, 2020.  The policy changes include new character and fitness requirements for all interpreters on the roster.

Interpreters currently on the roster have 90 days from the policy effective date of December 1, 2020 to submit a notarized affidavit and a notarized criminal background check from the State of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Affidavit
The new affidavit can be found on the Minnesota Judicial Branch website.  Please print a blank affidavit and bring it to a Notary Public. Wait to sign the affidavit until you are with the Notary Public.  Once you have the completed and notarized affidavit, you can scan it, save it to your computer and upload it directly to your profile in IRMA. Instructions on how to upload an affidavit in IRMA are posted on the Interpreter Resources webpage.

If you prefer, you can mail it to the Court Interpreter Program:
Minnesota Judicial Center
Court Interpreter Program, Room 105
25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
St. Paul, MN 55155

Criminal Background Check
The form with instructions is available on our website. This form must also be notarized. Please print the form, complete the top half and bring it to a Notary Public. Wait to sign the form until you are with the Notary Public.

Instructions on the bottom of the form are very important. You will mail the completed form directly to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension:
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, CHA Unit
1430 Maryland Avenue East
St. Paul, MN 55106.

When you mail the completed form to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, you must also include $15 for processing the criminal background check and a stamped envelope addressed to the Court Interpreter Program:
Minnesota Judicial Center
Court Interpreter Program, Room 105
25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
St. Paul, MN 55155

You have until March 1, 2021 to complete these requirements, but we encourage you to take care of these tasks as soon as possible. I hope completion of these requirements is not a burden. Please contact me or Julie Grengs if you have any questions or concerns.  The best way to reach us is through email.

On behalf of everyone in the Minnesota Judicial Branch, thank you very much for your continued work in our District Courts.

Sincerely,
Polly Ryan
