Bench and Bar Announce Judicial Ride-Along Program

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (Nov. 11, 2000) --  The Hennepin County District Court and the Hennepin County Bar Association announce a “Judicial Ride-Along” program designed to allow attorneys to witness first-hand a judge’s role, both in chambers and in the courtroom.  This program is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, and one that will lead to greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities of judges in Hennepin County.  The program was conceived and developed by the HCBA’s Bench and Bar Committee, which has active members from the bar association and from the Hennepin County District Court.

Attorneys who have participated in the “pilot” program described the experience as “eye-opening” and enlightening.  Current HCBA President Aaron Biber was one of the first attorneys to give the program a trial run.  Despite twelve years as a civil litigator, Biber noted “a newfound appreciation of a judge’s role.”  Observing the court from the vantage of the bench in a homicide trial also opened his eyes to a variety of security concerns for all courtroom participants, particularly court staff.  Biber also was impressed with how all court participants “made it their utmost priority to ensure the fairness of the proceeding.”  Biber enthusiastically endorsed the program and encouraged bench and bar to quickly open the program to others.

Speaking on behalf of the bench, Bench and Bar Co-Chair Judge Marilyn Justman Kaman says the program should provide valuable insight into the day-to-day issues facing judges.  “Every workday a judge deals with many issues and cases, both inside and outside the courtroom.  This program should give attorneys a greater understanding of the judicial decision-making process.  In turn, they may become more effective advocates in court.”

The Ride-Along program is open to any lawyer currently licensed to practice law in Minnesota.  Interested lawyers may contact the program coordinator, HCBA Executive Director Larry Buxbaum  (612-752-6610).  Lawyers will be paired with judges of the Hennepin County District Court who have volunteered to participate.
