Chief Justice Invites Public to Open House
Posted: Wednesday, May 1, 2002
The MJC is the St. Paul home of the state’s Judicial Branch, housing the Minnesota Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Tax Court, Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals, Lawyers’ Professional Responsibility Board and State Court Administration. More than 30 judges and 300 employees work in the building, completed in 1990. The MJC is an architecturally unique structure that blends a turn-of-the-century courthouse with a modern office addition.
The open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 at the Minnesota Judicial Center, 25 Constitution Avenue, St. Paul.
“Our courts impact the lives of citizens in a very real way, yet our work can still be a mystery to some,” said Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen A. Blatz. “This is an opportunity to see what we do, where we work and to learn more about the Judicial Branch’s rich history. It is also a wonderful chance for the judiciary to meet the people we serve.”
The open house will include numerous activities, such as:
- Guided tours of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Minnesota Law Library and other areas of the Judicial Center.
- An opportunity to chat with judges and justices.
- An information fair about law-related topics and court/law careers with nearly 20 different organizations, including the Attorney General’s Office, the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis, local bar associations, the MN Court Interpreter Program, law schools and the Ramsey County Jury Office.
- Self-guided tours of historic judicial portraits and judicial history.
- Presentations about Minnesota’s historic courthouses.
The event celebrates national Law Day in May. President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Law Day in 1958 to give Americans an opportunity to reflect on the country’s legal heritage, the role of law in our society and the rights and responsibilities that come with a democracy. This year’s theme is Assuring Equal Justice for All.
