Contribute Your Perspective to Minnesota’s Legal Landscape. Join the Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification.

The Minnesota Supreme Court is seeking a civic-minded individual (non-attorney) to join the 12‑member Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification. This is a rare chance to help set the standards that define legal expertise across the state while serving with other volunteers who share a passion for fairness, clarity, and professional excellence.

 

What Does This Board Do?

  • Approves and accredits the agencies that certify lawyers as specialists in fields ranging from family law to environmental law.
  • Crafts definitions for specialty areas, refines board policies, and considers appeals of denied applicant agencies.
  • Meets approximately three times per year in St. Paul. Board members are reimbursed for costs of travel and lodging, if necessary.

Who Are You?

  • A Minnesota resident who brings a fresh, non‑legal perspective to the table.
  • A good communicator comfortable reviewing written material and speaking up in discussion.
  • A non-lawyer who cares about the integrity and quality of legal services in our state.

How to Apply

  • Write a brief letter of Interest telling us why you’re the perfect fit.
  • Attach a current Resume highlighting relevant experience, community involvement, or any expertise that would enrich board deliberations.

Applications must be received by 4:30 pm on Friday, January 16, 2026.
