Hennepin County Judge Kevin Burke to Receive National Recognition for Service


ST. PAUL, MN (Oct. 10, 2002) – Hennepin County District Court Judge Kevin S. Burke will receive the 2002 Distinguished Service Award from the National Center for State Courts on Friday, October 11, at 11:30 a.m. at the Hennepin County Government Center.

Judge Burke was recognized for his distinguished and proven record of dedication to improving the administration of justice.  Serving on the Hennepin County District Court bench since 1984, Judge Burke has made numerous contributions and advancements in the areas of legal aid, corrections and chemical dependency. 

The National Center for State Courts said:  “Judge Burke’s contributions to improving the justice system are far-reaching.  He chaired the Minnesota State Board of Public Defense, and during his tenure Judge Burke was one of the leaders in a successful effort to improve and expand the state’s public defender system.  He has served as Chair of the Minnesota Conference of Chief Judges and has received numerous awards for his achievements.  In 1998, Judge Burke was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his continuous efforts to help free people of chemical dependency; in 1997, he received the Director’s Community Leadership Award from the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation; in 1995 Judge Burke was presented the David Graven Public Service Award by the Minnesota State Bar Association; and in 1994 he received the Jack Young Excellence in Corrections Award, presented by the Minnesota Association of Community Correction Act.”

Judge Burke is the Chief Judge of the Fourth Judicial District.  He is a past member of the National Center for State Courts’ Board of Directors.  He serves as an adjunct professor of law at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota.  Prior to joining the bench, Judge Burke served in private practice and as assistant public defender in the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office.

Burger, the National Center for State Courts is a nonprofit organization that promotes justice through leadership and service to the state courts.  Through numerous programs and divisions, the NCSC is committed to improving the administration of justice in the United States and abroad.
