Hennepin Court Collaborates with Community on Restorative Justice Initiative

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (Sept. 9, 2004) -- For the second time since 2003, the Fourth Judicial District, the faith community, and non-profit and Minneapolis neighborhood organizations will give nearly 1,500 individuals an opportunity to give back to the community while resolving outstanding adult traffic charges.

The Hennepin County Restorative Justice Event 2004, will be held Saturday, September 11th at the Sabathani Community Center at 310 East 38th Street in Minneapolis.  Participants will perform community service to fulfill fines and fees related to outstanding Hennepin County traffic charges.

The initiative will enable participants to make positive changes in their lives, restore the neighborhoods in which they live and fulfill their obligations to the criminal justice system.  Felony cases will not be resolved at this event.

Participants were required to complete an application to participate.  Those who have not submitted an application will not be allowed to participate.  More than 1,000 letters were sent to participants notifying them of where they should report on September 11th.  An additional 400 individuals are scheduled to appear in front of judges at the Sabathani Community Center.  Children should not be brought to this event.  Participants are responsible for their own lunches.

Hennepin County District Court will continue its commitment to actively assist offenders in regaining their driving privileges.  The Court will incorporate the principles of Restorative Justice into its ongoing hearing offices and Minneapolis traffic calendar on a permanent basis in early 2005.
