Judges Team Up with School, Asian Council to Discuss Justice Issues with Minneapolis Students, Families

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 26, 2003) – Minnesota judges will team up with Patrick Henry High School and the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans to discuss family law and other justice issues with students and their families on Monday, March 3 in Minneapolis.

Henry High School Asian students and their parents will meet with judges and other participants in the justice system during a formal program about the laws that affect families.  Roundtable discussions about immigration issues, criminal law, law enforcement and other justice issues will also take place.

“The Constitution charges judges to ensure equal access to the courts for all Minnesotans, and judges recognize the importance of this responsibility,” said District Court Judge Edward Lynch.  “This forum presents an exciting opportunity to share information about the justice system and hear from the people we serve.”

The evening program will follow a full day of instructional sessions for Henry High School students regarding topics such as search and seizure, rights of juveniles, fair trials in the age of mass media and consequences.

The sessions are part of Henry High School’s issue day, during which students sign up for issue-related programs in place of their regular classes.  This marks the first time that the Judicial Branch or any outside organization has paired up with the school to provide sessions that follow a particular theme.
