Minnesota Supreme Court Convenes at Morris Area High School
Posted: Wednesday, April 16, 2003
MORRIS, MN (April 16, 2003) - The Minnesota Supreme Court convened at Morris Area High School in Morris, Minn., today in an effort to open the doors of the Judicial Branch to the public.
The state’s highest court heard oral arguments of an actual case, State of Minnesota v. Jamie Glenn Richardson (File No. C9-02-815). The Court generally issues its opinions on cases three to five months following oral arguments. All Supreme Court opinions are available upon release at www.courts.state.mn.us.
“The issues we face as Minnesotans affect young people as much as adults,” said Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen A. Blatz. “This visit has been a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce the Court to students and exchange ideas for the future with the next generation of leaders.”
Since the Supreme Court convened oral arguments in Rochester, Minn., in 1995, the school visits have taken center stage in the Court’s efforts to build the public’s trust and confidence in the judiciary. The Morris event marks the 17th in-school oral argument for the Court and the first visit to the Eighth Judicial District since the Court visited Willmar in 1997.
Today’s program included high school students from Morris, Herman/Norcross, Hancock, Chokio/Alberta, Willmar and Canby, as well as University of Minnesota, Morris students. Pioneer Public Television, in cooperation with the University of Minnesota, Morris, Media Services Department, taped the program and will rebroadcast it at 7 p.m. May 10 and May 28 on channels 10 (KWCM) in Appleton, 20 (KSMN) in Worthington and UHF 49 in Fergus Falls.
Morris area attorneys volunteered to visit classrooms to review the case with students and help them prepare for today’s oral arguments.
Following today’s arguments, the Justices answered students’ questions on a wide variety of topics. Justices also ate lunch with Morris students and visited classrooms at Morris Area Elementary and Junior High Schools, Benson High School, Minnewaska High School in Glenwood, Minn., and Kerkhoven High School.
