Posted: Tuesday, October 14, 2003
WINONA, MN (October 14, 2003) – During its first visit to Winona, Minn., the Minnesota Supreme Court convened at Winona Senior High School today in an effort to open the doors of the Judicial Branch to the public.
The state’s highest court heard oral arguments of an actual case, Amy Marie Broehm v. Mayo Clinic Rochester (File No. C0-02-959). The Court generally issues its opinions on cases three to five months following oral arguments. Opinions are available at .
“The issues we face as Minnesotans affect young people as much as adults,” said Minnesota
Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen A. Blatz. “This visit has been a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce the Court to students and exchange ideas for the future with the next generation of leaders.”
The high school program was part of a two-day visit by the Court that also included the October 13 rededication of the Winona County Courthouse and a “Meet Your Court” dinner for the public at Winona State University.
Since the Supreme Court convened oral arguments in Rochester, Minn., in 1995, the school visits have taken center stage in the Court’s efforts to build the public’s trust and confidence in the judiciary. The Winona event marks the 18th oral argument for students and the first visit to Winona, and the Third Judicial District since the Court visited Austin in 1998.
Today’s program included high school students from Winona, Rushford-Peterson, Lewiston-Altura, St. Charles and LaCrescent. HBC-TV televised the program live and will produce an educational program that will be televised and sent to schools later this school year.
Winona area attorneys volunteered to visit classrooms to review the case with students and help them prepare for today’s oral arguments.
Following today’s arguments, the Justices answered students’ questions on a wide variety of topics. Justices also ate lunch with Winona students and visited classrooms at Winona Senior High School, Winona Cotter High School, Jefferson Elementary in Winona, Wabasha-Kellogg Secondary School, Winona Middle School, St. Charles High School and Winona State University.
