MN Supreme Court Announces Visit to Morris Area
Posted: Friday, March 28, 2003
ST. PAUL, MN (March 28, 2003) – Western Minnesota residents are invited to meet the Minnesota Supreme Court and local judges during an informal community dinner on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 in Morris, MN. The “Meet Your Court” dinner will kick off the Supreme Court’s spring visit to the Eighth Judicial District.
The state’s highest court also will hear oral arguments of an actual case at Morris Area High School on April 16. Morris area students will pack the auditorium to watch oral arguments and ask questions of the justices. Following the program, the justices will eat lunch with students and visit classrooms at schools throughout the region.
The visit is part of a biannual program that seeks to teach students about the court system and build the public’s trust and confidence in the Judicial Branch.
While the Morris High School program is focused on students, all members of the public are invited to Oyate Hall on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Morris, on April 15 to meet the Supreme Court Justices and ask questions over dinner. Dinner will include chicken parmesan, penne pasta with sun-dried tomato and garlic sauce, caeser salad, breadsticks and beverages.
Tickets, which are priced only to cover the cost of dinner, can be purchased before April 10 for $11 at the Information Center at the University’s Student Center or by calling Stevens County District Court at (320) 589-7287.
Since the Supreme Court convened oral arguments in Rochester, MN in 1995, the school visits have taken center stage in the Court’s efforts to improve the public’s understanding of the judiciary’s work. The Morris visit marks the 17th in-school oral argument for the Court.
