MN Supreme Court Announces Visit to Winona Area

ST. PAUL, MN (Sept. 19, 2003) – Southeast Minnesota residents are invited to meet the Minnesota Supreme Court and local judges during an informal community dinner on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003 in Winona, MN.  The “Meet Your Court” dinner is one of several events that are part of the Supreme Court’s fall visit to the Third Judicial District.

The state’s highest court will also rededicate the Winona County Courthouse on October 13 and hear oral arguments of an actual case at Winona Senior High School on Tuesday, October 14.  Winona area students will pack the high school auditorium to watch oral arguments and ask questions of the justices.  Following the program, the justices will eat lunch with students and visit classrooms at schools across the region.

The visit is part of a biannual program that seeks to teach students about the court system and build the public’s trust and confidence in the Judicial Branch.

While the Winona High School program is focused on students, all members of the public are invited to Kryzsko Commons & College Center on the campus of Winona State University on October 13 to meet the Supreme Court justices and ask questions over dinner.  Dinner will include chicken parmesan, pasta, vegetables, garden salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverages.

Tickets, which are priced only to cover the cost of dinner, can be purchased by Monday, October 6 for $10 at Winona County Court Administration at the Winona County Courthouse, 171 West Third Street, Winona, (507) 457-6385, or at the Winona State University Student Union Office in Kryzsko Commons.

Since the Supreme Court convened oral arguments in Rochester, MN in 1995, the school visits have taken center stage in the Court’s efforts to improve the public’s understanding of the judiciary’s work.  The Winona visit marks the 18th in-school oral argument throughout Minnesota for the Court.
