ST. PAUL, Minn. (April 29, 2000) – The Honorable Terri J. Stoneburner, Assistant Chief Judge of the Fifth Judicial District in Southwest Minnesota, took the oath April 28 as the newest member of the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Court of Appeals Chief Judge Edward Toussaint, Jr., presided over the ceremonies. He was joined by Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson, Supreme Court Justice Joan Ericksen Lancaster, Judge Gary Crippen of the Court of Appeals, as well as Noel Phifer, president of the Ninth District Bar Association, and Linda Heine, president of the Southern Women Lawyer’s Association.

Judge Toussaint said he was pleased to welcome Judge Stoneburner to the Court.

“We are delighted to have Judge Stoneburner join the Minnesota Court of Appeals,” Toussaint said. “Judge Stoneburner’s commitment to people has touched so many. This is the mark of a true leader.

“Judge Stoneburner’s service has benefited the people of Minnesota and the judicial system,” he said. “This committed service will benefit the people we serve.”

Stoneburner’s love of travel began when she was an undergraduate in Hanover, Indiana. She studied abroad at the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland, and later joined the Peace Corps. All told, she has visited 25 countries.

In 1975, she graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle. She then volunteered and was later assigned full-time as a staff attorney for the State of Alaska Commission for Human Rights.

In 1980, she moved to Mankato, Minn., where she worked in private practice at Farrish, Johnson, Maschka Attorneys at Law. She became a partner there in 1984. In April 1990, she became a District Court Judge in New Ulm. She was later elected Assistant Chief Judge of the Fifth Judicial District, a position that became effective July 1, 1997.

In a March 8, 2000 ceremony in the Governor’s Office in St. Paul, Gov. Jesse Ventura announced Stoneburner’s appointment to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In his remarks that day, Ventura said, “Judge Stoneburner will work well with the other judges on the Court of Appeals and be a good ambassador of the court to the community.”

Stoneburner has served on many committees and organizations during her career. Among them are the Women League of Voters, the Brown County Judicial Advisory Council on Families, the Brown County Teen Court Advisory Board and the Minnesota Women Lawyers Association. She also served as chairperson of the Supreme Court Conciliation Court Advisory Committee, and participated in various other Supreme Court task forces.
