Orientation, Ethics Exam for Court Interpreters to be Held in Worthington July 29-31


ST. PAUL, MN (July 8, 2004) - The Minnesota Court Administrator’s Office will hold an ethics test and orientation to court interpreting in Worthington, MN July 29-31.  Individuals with interpreting skills in any language are encouraged to register for the sessions.

Participants will learn about what court interpreters do and how the court system operates.  They will also practice interpreting skills, take a back-translation test and complete an ethics exam.  Successful completion of the program and a passing score on the exams are required for interpreters who wish to be listed on the state’s roster of available court interpreters.

The Minnesota Judicial Branch and the Nobles County District Court are sponsoring the program, which costs $25.  Registration forms can be requested by email at CIP@courts.state.mn.us, by phone at (651) 297-7590, or by mail from Education and Organization Development, State Court Administration.

What:  Ethics test and orientation to court interpreting.

When:      5-8:30 p.m., Thursday, July 29:  Participants will learn about court interpreting, take a back-translation test, and discuss ethics.

5-8:30 p.m., Friday, July 30:  Participants will work on memory, shadowing and duo-tasking skills, discuss ethics and take the ethics exam.

8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, July 31:  Participants will learn about the court system, practice interpreting skills, and look at legal terminology.

Where:        Prairie Justice Center, 1530 Airport Road, Worthington, Minnesota.
