Second Judicial District to celebrate Law Day with event on May 3

On Thursday, May 3, the Second Judicial District in Ramsey County will be hosting public tours and opening its doors as part of a Law Day “Open Courthouse” event. The event is being held to showcase Ramsey County’s historic courthouse building and educate the public about the work that goes on in Minnesota’s courts.

Public tours are available at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m., with the opportunity to meet with judges and others who work in the justice system. To reserve a spot for a tour, please call (651) 222-4786 or send an email to courthousetours@rchs.com

“As our nation pauses to celebrate Law Day, we wanted to give the public an opportunity to learn more about their local justice system and meet the people who work in our courthouse,” said Second Judicial District Chief Judge John Guthmann. “We will even share many of the interesting stories that have shaped the history of the Ramsey County Courthouse, which opened in 1932.”

The Open Courthouse event is scheduled to coincide with Law Day, a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Law Day underscores how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share. Law Day was first established in 1958 through a proclamation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Congress passed a joint resolution designating May 1 as Law Day, U.S.A, in 1961.

The Ramsey County Historical Society is a proud partner in this event.
