Sherburne County Judge will Receive State MADD Award

ELK RIVER, MN (Aug. 4, 2003) - Sherburne County District Court Judge Alan Pendleton will receive the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) 2003 State Recognition Award this week from the organization’s Minnesota Chapter.

Judge Pendleton will be recognized for his work on a video called, “The Costs of Underage Drinking and Driving.”  The video, which was a joint project amongst the courts, Sherburne County businesses and citizens, will be used to educate students, parents and other community members about the consequences of drinking and driving.

“Statistics show that alcohol and other drug use plays a significant role in about 80 percent of the traffic and criminal cases that enter the court system each year, including 41 percent of the annual traffic deaths in our country,” said Judge Pendleton.  “This video project is a great example of the collaboration that is necessary if we intend to protect our communities from the destructive effects of drinking and driving.”

The video follows the story of a teenaged driver who is arrested for drinking and driving, and explains the consequences of her choice.  It is less than 10 minutes long and has been sent upon request to driver’s education and other teachers, youth groups and community groups.  The project began in December 2001 and was completed in April 2003.

Judge Pendleton was appointed to the Sherburne County bench in Elk River in September 1999.  Since then, he has been active in creating awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.  He frequently speaks to D.A.R.E. graduates and their families, and has been actively involved with DWI education for law enforcement agencies and attorneys.

To receive a copy of the videotape, contact Ben Robeck, Sherburne County Public Health, at (763) 241-2767.  The cost is $10 for organizations in Sherburne County and $25 for requests from outside the county.
