Law Day event brings mock trial and civic education to life

Students got a firsthand look at the justice system in action during Law Day in Koochiching County.

Three eighth and ninth grade classes attended the event and participated in a variety of hands-on learning experiences alongside justice partners from across the community.

Judge Jerrod Shermoen welcomed the students, and representatives from Probation, Law Enforcement, the County Attorney’s Office, and the Public Defender’s Office all played important roles throughout the day, helping students better understand the different responsibilities within the legal system and how each agency works together within the courts.

The highlight of the event was a mock protest held outside the courthouse focused on a timely and relatable issue for students: whether cell phones should be banned or allowed in schools. During the demonstration, a probation officer portraying a protest participant was “arrested” for disorderly conduct, leading to a mock criminal trial inside the courtroom.

Students had the opportunity to observe courtroom procedures, hear arguments from both sides, and watch the judicial process unfold from start to finish. After hearing the evidence presented during each session, the student jury returned guilty verdicts in all three trials.

The event was designed to promote civic education, encourage critical thinking, and provide students with a better understanding of the judicial branch and the importance of respectful civic engagement.

Law Day is celebrated nationally each year to honor the rule of law and educate communities about the role of the legal system in society.
