Volunteer to Serve on the State Board of Appellate Counsel & Training

The Minnesota Supreme Court is looking for an attorney to fill a vacant seat on the State Board of Appellate Counsel and Training. This is a unique chance to shape the future of appellate defense for parents navigating juvenile‑protection cases across the state. The board was established in 2023 and consists of seven members including: four public members appointed by the Governor and three members appointed by the Supreme Court, at least one of whom must have experience representing parents in juvenile court and who include two attorneys admitted to practice law in the state and one public member. Three or more members must reside in judicial districts other than the 1st, 2nd, 4th or 10th.

Why This Role Matters:

Protect families: Help ensure that parents have high-quality legal representation at all stages of child protection proceedings.

Strengthen the profession: Grow a robust network of parent‑attorneys throughout Minnesota.

Leverage funding: Work with the Department of Human Services to secure and deploy Title IV‑E resources.

Who the Board is Looking For:

  • Attorney licensed to practice law in Minnesota
  • Direct experience representing parents in juvenile court matters at the district and appellate levels
  • A genuine passion for child-protection law and appellate advocacy
  • Experience with the Indian Child Welfare Act or the Minnesota Indian Family Preservation Act
  • Familiarity with Chapter 260C, Rules of Juvenile Protection Procedure, and rules of Civil Appellate Procedure
  • Previous involvement in parent-attorney training or mentorship programs

Restrictions: You cannot be a sitting judge, registered lobbyist, guardian ad litem, counsel for guardian ad litem, DHS employee/contractor, or a current city or county attorney.

How to Apply:

  • Prepare a current resume and letter of interest detailing your relevant experience, why you’re excited to serve on the board, and the judicial district where you reside.
  • Submit by Friday, March 20th, 2026, 4:30 PM (applications must be received by the deadline).
