Mental Health Justice Initiative

The Mental Health Justice Initiative (MHJI) was established by Judicial Council to foster collaboration and open dialogue between the Minnesota Judicial Branch, justice partners, and community members. The Advisory committee will identify, develop, and implement shared solutions to improve outcomes for justice-involved individuals living with mental illness.

Overview

Statewide Core Principles

  • Practices in competency and civil commitment proceedings must be strategically aligned to meet the needs of the individual and ensure public safety.
  • Mental health services are more effective when the Courts are engaged in a process of informed and shared decision-making by facilitating partnerships.
  • Behavioral health disorders are a foremost public health concern, and the justice system must prevent further harm caused by criminalization.
  • Dignity and respect must be maintained by recognizing that culturally relevant and therapeutically appropriate services are central to success.
